Found out recently that Chief Red Cloud is my Great, Great, Great Grandpa and am excited to learn more about one of the Greatest Indian Chiefs that successfully defeated the Military & was at Custer's Last Stand fighting next to Chief Crazy Horse and Chief Sitting Bull. Sioux Indian heritage on one side of my family and Cherokee on the other.
It is so interesting and informative to read about the life of this great leader and how he felt about the Europeans and white Americans taking over their land. Even though they didn't have a written paper or title to the land each tribe knew the boundries of the different tribes. He was very brave and risked his life for the members of his tribe since he was the leader. It told how he rose as a young teen to this to anyone wanting to learn fight and win victories and was so brave that they elected him as a leader. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Indians.
One of the most fascinating, informative, and thrilling books you will ever read about the American Indian. Many books have been written on the settling of America, but this one is tops because it is brief, written by someone who was a part of it, with details one usually doesn't find in other books.You will learn things that probably you have wondered or thought about, about the American Indian that you never knew. A great book as told by Red Cloud himself, through a friend and interpreter. All the details of his early life, how he became leader of his people, and well known beyond his people. His achievements against the invading immigrants to his country are missing, but that is as he wished. He knew that to tell those stories would just stir up the Hornets nest against his people.
Refreshing to get a book covering Red Cloud's years prior to his famous war. However as with all biographies of Native Americans, much has to be speculated about their young years before consistent contact with the settlers/army was maintained.
